New leader for Northwestern Illinois

Pekin, Illinois
The Board of General Superintendents announced that Scott J. Sherwood was elected district superintendent for Northwestern Illinois.

With General Superintendent J. K. Warrick presiding, Sherwood was elected on the fifth ballot on April 14. His new assignment will begin 30 days after the election.

Sherwood, who currently serves as pastor of the Richardson, Texas, Church of the Nazarene, follows Crawford M. Howe as district superintendent. Howe is retiring after more than 18 years as Northwestern Illinois D.S. He also led the Kentucky District for five years.

This election marks a homecoming of sorts for Sherwood, who was ordained on the Northwestern Illinois District in 1994 and served there until moving to Richardson in February 2011.

Sherwood was senior pastor of Bloomington First Church for nearly 12 years before taking the Richardson church. He also served as a youth pastor at Chicago First Church and evangelism and youth associate pastor at both Pekin First Church and Rock Island First Church.

He was a registered and commissioned Nazarene evangelist for four years and has spoken in churches across the U.S. East, Midwest, and South.

"Ever since Barb Kester at Pekin First Church made me teach primary Sunday School at age 14, the church has repeatedly trusted me with responsibility before I felt ready to handle it," Sherwood said. "Sherry and I are overwhelmed at this call and confident in God's provision. We are at once overjoyed to rejoin our NWIL District family and distressed to leave our RCN (Richardson) family who have been overwhelmingly supportive partners in mission."

Sherwood is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary. He is currently pursuing a doctorate degree from NTS.

Scott and his wife, Sherry (Fortado), reside in Sachse, Texas.
